Chapter 13
Among the things Vin had most taken for granted in his life, being able to wash his own fucking hair was pretty high on the list.
True, he still had a partial cast on, keeping his left ankle still rigidly locked, but he was finally able to bend at the knee. And the arm cast was gone. True to Doctor Rouxâs predictions, Vin had gotten a set of infected scratches along his tender skin, especially along the back of his hand, nothing that a little Bacitracin couldnât clear up. Being able to flex his fingers, eat like a normal person without having Beau cut up Vinâs steak like Vin was some sort of toddler, that was a relief and a half.
So the fact that he had his head under the faucet, leaning back in the bathtub, wasnât exactly perfect, but it was a hundred and fifty percent better than it had been the week before. A plastic bag was held on his lower legâVin still couldnât actually get in the shower, and that was still a sore spot, but at least he didnât need help to keep relatively clean. He twisted water out of his hair and awkwardly got up, keeping a tight grip on the tub rails. The very last thing he needed was to slip.
âNever taking that for granted again,â he said to his reflection. âNever, ever, ever.â
He balanced on one foot to pull on his boxers. Getting dressed was still harder than he would have thought, and he had to buy all new jeans, since his preferred skinny jeans would not fit over his cast. Being able to bend at the knee, well, that was just a great evolutionary trait. Joints. Wonders would never cease.
He toweled his hair into a reasonable sort of submission, greased up his too-long locks with product. He needed a haircut. Vin checked his look in the mirror. Somewhere in the last few months, heâd gained some weight. Eating too much and not being able to hit the gym at all and his face was looking puffy. Dissolute. Ugh. Heâd have to do something about that. After physical therapy was over.
Which, he understood from his doctor, would be an absolute beast. So far, this was turning out to be the worst summer in his entire life.
At least it was almost over, to be followed by the second worst autumn in known history.
Not as bad, he insisted. Beau wasnât leaving because he was leaving. He was justâ¦leaving.
âFuck.â
Vin fumbled for the cane, another improvement, except that he hated it already. Crutches had left him feeling injured. The cane made him feel old. Shortly after Roux had removed the cast, Vin and Beau had gone for a little stroll around the park, nothing much, just to get some fresh air and stretch his legs. Vin had been much more aware of the eyes following him as he limped, leaning heavily on the cane, the ridge of which molded to his hand. Even with the cast, on vivid display under his shorts, Vin became extremely aware of what being sixty must be like.
